Aloha, thank you for reviewing my information.

$16,131 – That’s the average cost of a safety violation within construction.

As I drive by jobsites or do job walks, I’m amazed at the number of employees putting themselves at risk each day. This in turn puts your company at risk.

At the beginning of 2024, OSHA increased the dollar amount of each violation to a maximum of $16,131. The maximum penalty for willful or repeated violations has increased to $161,323 per violation. The forecast for 2024 is expected to see an up-tick in the number of OSHA violations due to labor shortages and unskilled workers entering the trades. Additionally, construction companies have reduced the number of supervisors and managers at several construction sites.

With so much happening in the construction industry each day, construction injuries are, unfortunately, more common than you think and OSHA is cracking down. In 2023, construction companies paid out more than $112 million dollars in penalties.

Here are the top five most common violations that occur in construction:

  1. Fall Protection – This standard refers to the practice of identifying hazards and providing protection from those hazards when needed. Requirements include identifying, inspecting, and assessing workplace conditions for fall or falling object hazards.
  2. Ladders – This standard commonly refers to self-supporting ladders, single ladders, extension ladders and fixed ladders. Requirements include specifications that ladders must meet, inspections, removal from service, and employee training.
  3. Scaffold – This standard involves fall arrest systems, supported scaffold platforms, and suspended scaffolding. Requirements include erecting and dismantling specifications, training, and inspections.
  4. Fall Protection Training – This standard applies to employees working at heights and the training they must receive. The requirements of this standard include training employees in fall hazards, certification and retraining when necessary.
  5. Eye and Face Protection – This standard commonly refers to eye and face protection such as safety glasses, goggles, and face shields. Requirements include identification of hazards and ensuring employees are supplied with the required protection and utilize it.
